Château d'Aiguilhe is owned and operated by Stephan von Neipperg, Count of the Holy Roman Empire and proprietor of Canon la Gaffelière in Saint-Emilion. This second property from von Neipperg offers exceptional value for Bordeaux, composed primarily of Merlot with 20% of red vines planted to Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged in 50% new French oak, and the results are impressive for the price, to say the least. Full on the nose with aromas of black plum, cherry, spring violet, fine herbs, and a touch of licorice, it is powerful on the palate yet shows a deft touch of restraint. Plush, densely-knit black fruits are still fresh with pepper and crushed coffee bean, and cushion a grip of well-matured tannins. Beautiful now, it will also reward up to 5 years in bottle. It's perfect alongside grilled lamb, braised red meat, or roasted mushrooms with grated Piave Vecchio or Parmigiano.
