The Caperitif is South Africa's answer to vermouth, and AA Badenhorst produces one of the best - he may be a great winemaker, but his Caperitif has earned him particular attention. His is based on Steen - or Chenin Blanc, as it's known elsewhere, fortified, and sweetened only with the grapes' natural sugars. Quinchona bark (the bittering agent used in tonic water) is a primary aromatic, but the remaining 35 botanicals are sourced locally from the Cape, including fynbos, kalmoes and naartjies - many of which are exclusively found here. If you've been looking for a new aperitif to play with or a drier and more aromatic Lillet, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
